Persona, by Ingemar Bergman
, Sweden 1966, 85 min
Now and then tth last years we saw films by Ingmar Bergman, Wild Strawberries and last autumn The Virgin Spring and The Passion of Anna. Bergman’s films are existentiell creations with person relations in focus. The actors, whom he had several he worked with in many films, witnessed about the closeness between him and them during their work, a closeness that can be contemplated in the many close-up images, where the human face is shown in all it’s pain and glory. To see his films is to participate in the human drama of longing for peace and consolation.
In Persona, filmed att Farö near Gotland, a young nurse, Alma, is put in charge of Elisabeth Vogler: an actress who is seemingly healthy in all respects, but will not talk. As they spend time together, Alma speaks to Elisabeth constantly, never receiving any answer. Alma eventually confesses her secrets to a seemingly sympathetic Elisabeth.
