Film Week – When I´m weak I´m strong

Filmklubben Sandgatan 8 at the Dominicans welcomes you to the Film Weak with three films by John Cassvetes, American independant director. Look at the program in the calendar of this site or at facebook Filmklubben Sandgatan 8.
We aim to create an interesting place to discuss and reflect on matters of life thourch the lens of good films. Everywhere you find traces of the Gospel, in life, in films, in litterature. Now it´s time again, here´s a text on the coming FIlm Week.

The actors are invited to gradually find the chraracters they play. Take follows take, and then another take. A spontaneous action is born. John Cassavetes directing is a non-directing presence. “Planning” he says, “is the most destructive thing”.

-<< Love is the primary emotion that determines almost everything that happens in life >> says John Cassavetes in an interview.
The actors are invited to gradually find the chraracters they play. Take follows take, and then another take. A spontaneous action is born. John Cassavetes directing is a non-directing presence. “Planning” he says, “is the most destructive thing”.
Astonishingly, Cassavetes always worked with a detailed script, yet the moments seem to have been captured accidentally.
Love, and the failure of love, is at the center of his filmmaking. We follow a stream where life flows; all idealistic ideas are stripped off. The characters are persons with dignity and a desire for love. They are vulnurable and taken by their passions to the point of insanity. As Saint Paul says “When I am weak, I am strong”.
Cassavetes presents a world where there is no obsession with safety. He provides us with an important perspective: What if we accept the odd, the different, the weak. Can love ever grow except in the presence of human weakness?

The premier actress in his films is Gena Rowland, his wife. Both their mothers also participate. The film set is a big family gathering.

John Cassavetes, born 1929, was of Greek descent, and active from the 50s to the 80s. Starting out as an actor, he was eventually one of the first directors to gain economic, and therefore cultural independance from Hollywood.
The societal message of his filmmaking is a demand for a freer expression. Still today his films call on us to stay free from ideologies, control and conventions.

For this semester’s FilmWeek, we screen three films which show a variety of Cassavetes’ works; a comedy, a drama and a film noir. No fear, just love.
